Care Provider
Mehdi M. Moezi, MD
Dr. Mehdi M. Moezi is board certified in medical oncology, hematology, and internal medicine. He practices at the Cancer Specialists of North Florida Fleming Island and Orange Park Cancer Centers.
Dr. Moezi’s areas of interest include clinical research, breast cancer, hematologic malignancies, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome, non Hodgkin’s lymphomas, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, myeloproliferative disorders, MGUS, chronic myelogenous leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, colon cancer, and lung cancer.
Through the research department at Cancer Specialists of North Florida, Dr. Moezi is participating in clinical research to find new treatments for cancer. As he works for better treatment, he says breast cancer “a very important issue,” in which treatments and outcomes have advanced dramatically in the last decade.
Dr. Moezi calls lung cancer and colon cancer “unmet need areas” and says scientists must work to develop new treatment options to improve outcomes. He also focuses on hematologic malignancies, which he calls, “complex entities with variety of subtypes and treatment options.”
Future treatment in these areas will include a better understanding of the molecular basis of cancer and progress in targeted and tailored individualized cancer treatment for any given tumor, he predicts.
“The new treatment will be more specific and less toxic and will provide better remission rates and longer duration of remissions and hopefully more cures.”
Some recent successes include new-targeted therapies in breast cancer, as well as advances in treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), multiple myeloma, and lymphomas. Targeted agents such as Rituximab, Herceptin, Avastin, Gleevec, and Tasigna are important steps forward, he says.
Dr. Moezi has always believed in the science of oncology and the principles behind clinical research. “In the past decade, time and again, the clinical cancer research has changed the way we understand, diagnose and treat cancer.”
He is especially pleased that he and the research team at Cancer Specialists of North Florida participated in designing and developing new treatments for multiple myeloma. “I have participated in many clinical trials and the outcome of some of this research has changed the standard of care for treating malignancies.”
Calling Cancer Specialists of North Florida the “perfect balance of research and private practice,” he is pleased to be part of a practice where he can “interact with patients and help them receive cutting edge treatment for their cancer.”
“I also have the privilege of actively participating in the design and conduct of clinical trials that help find new treatment options for cancer patients,” he says.
At Cancer Specialists of North Florida, he appreciates “using cutting edge science and technology in diagnosis and treatment of cancer, having access to a variety of new agents through clinical trial, and the practice’s multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment.
Dr. Moezi says he consistently admires his patients for their “resilience, persistence, courage, and hope.” He especially respects patients who take charge of their treatment and are well informed. “The common denominator is the courage, the fight and often the good outcome.”
Born in Tehran, Iran, Dr. Moezi lives in Fleming Island with his wife and two children. When not at work, Dr. Moezi enjoys performance arts, music, theater, opera, philharmonic orchestra, reading, travel, skiing, and museums.
